My own Gaming Table - Forest

Hello!

So as it was announced, here is the next post form "My own Gaming Table" series. However this one, have an important change!

I'm happy to present Marcin Szmyt as second author on this blog, you will find here more of his work soon :) (all his post will be translated from original polish version). Marcin is a well experienced modeller and his work is well known amongst Polish FoW players, I hope you will like it too!

My own Gaming Table - Forest 

Korzystam z tradycyjnych metod i łatwo dostępnych materiałów:
- Płyta MDF ;
- Klej wikol i cyjanoakrylowy;
- Piasek;
- Trawka statyczna;
- Mech chrobotek(Island moss);
- Gotowe drzewka.

Drzewka to wyrób firmy Heki przeznaczony teoretycznie do makiet kolejkowych. Do celów FoW nadaje się IMHO lepiej. Nie wyglądają one jak prawdziwe drzewa, co jednak nie ma specjalnego znaczenia gdyż odrobinę "podrasujemy" ich wygląd. Końcowy wynik jest nadal zadawalający!

I use traditional methods and easy access materials:
- MDF board;
- PVA and cyanoacrylate glue;
- Sand;
- Static grass;
- Island moss;
- Pre-made trees;

Trees are made by Heki company and those are theoretically designed for railway modelling. However IMHO those are much better for FoW. Trees are not looking like real ones, but it doesn't matter as we will "pimp" they look a little.

Zaczynam od wycięcia z płyty MDF placków dużych stanowiących obszar lasu oraz małych do których będą przymocowane drzewa.Te będzie można zdejmować dla łatwiejszego manewrowania jednostkami wewnątrz lasu.
Let's start from cutting out of MDF board large pieces that will act like forest area and small ones that we will use as a base for the trees. We will be able to move them to make troops manoeuvring inside forest much easier. End result will be satisfactory.

Krawędzie szlifowałem papierem ściernym w celu uzyskania zaookrąglonych brzegów
I grind the edges with sand paper to make those more round. 

W małych plackach wywierciłem otworki o średnicy wykałaczki. Dlaczego? To niespodzianka :)
In small pieces I drilled holes with diameter of toothpick, why? That is a surprise :)

Za pomocą kleju Wikol(PVA) przykleiłem piasek o wyraźnym ziarnie.
Using PVA glue I glued sand (big grain) onto boards.

Po wyschnięciu kleju, używając farby w sprayu (RAL 8011 z DIY Store) nadałem kolor ziemi moim plackom. Krawędzie dużych za pomocą twardego pędzla drybrushowałem kolorem Light Tan Pactry (do tego znakomicie się nadaje).
After glue has dry I used spray paint (RAL 8011 from DIY Store) and make boards more (colour) ground like. Next I dry brush the edges on big pieces using Light Tan colour from Pactra (it suit perfectly to this job).

Całą powierzchnię mniejszych podstaw pod drzewa  posypałem trawką elektrostatyczną. W tym celu skorzystałem z urządzenia wykonanego własnoręcznie z elektrycznej packi na muchy. Po posmarowaniu całej powierzchni klejem (bezbarwny po wyschnięciu) podpiąłem uziemienie do powierzchni podstawki i wytrząsnąłem trawkę z sitka (Elektrostatyka robi swoje!)
Wykałaczka w otworze pomaga utrzymać przedmiot. Pozostawiłem do wyschnięcia i usunąłem nadmiar cennej trawki miękkim pędzlem.
Whole surface of smaller bases (for trees) I sprinkle with static grass. In this purpose I used my own device created from fly swatter (hand made!). After applying PVA glue onto the surface (colourless when dry) After I grounded the board  I sprinkled the static grass using metal strainer (Electrostatics will do the job!). A tooth peak inside the board will help to hold it. I left it to dry and then I removed extra grass with soft brush. 

Następnie brzegi wysiałem długą trawą w kolorze Wild Grass za pomocą tego samego urządzenia.
Next, using the same device I applied long grass (Wild Grass colour) onto the edges of the board.

I oto wspomniana niespodzianka. W pieńkach drzew wywierciłem otwory o średnicy wykałaczki i wkleiłem je tam (wykałaczki) korzystająć z kleju cyjanoakrylowego.
And here is mentioned surprise. In tree logs I also drilled  holes with toothpick diameter and glue them in (toothpick) using cyanoacrylate glue.

Teraz posmarowawszy korzenie drzew tym samym klejem umieściłem drzewka w losowych otworach. Wystarczy ściąć teraz wykałaczki równo z powierzchnią płytki i powoli wszystko zaczyna wyglądać jak las.
Now after putting more cyanoacrylate glue on trees roots I placed them in random holes. Now just cut the toothpicks to board level. Everything starts to slowly look like real forest.

Las jak to las posiada poszycie,więc z mchu ukradzionego z zagrody reniferów wykonałem proste krzaczki :)
Forest, like forest do, have its own undergrowth. Using moss stolen from reindeer pen I made simple bushes :)

Teraz nadszedł czas na podłoże pod drzewa. Są nawet ważniejsze od samych drzew, gdyż to one wyznaczają granice terenu wg. zasad Flames of War.
Now it is time for forest grounds. Those are even more important than trees itself as based on Flames of War rules, where board edges indicates forest borders

Postanowiłem wykorzystać dwa kolory drobno zmielonej gąbki własnej produkcji.
I decided to use two coloured flock of mine own production. 

Za pomocą lejka (Lejek napełnia się gąbką i lekko stuka w krawędź) z jaśniejszej gąbki usypałem plamki na uprzednio wysmarowanej klejem introligatorskim powierzchni podstaw. Nadmiar usunąłem odwracając płytkę nad kuwetą. Następnie spiesząc się, aby klej nie wysechł, tym samym lejkiem naniosłem ciemną gąbkę. Ponownie usunąłem nadmiar gąbki.
Using funnel (fill the funnel with flock than gently tap it) I applied brighter coloured flock on previously glued surface of large bases. I removed the excess by just turning the board over (above container). Next quickly before glue will dry, with the same funnel I applied dark flock. Again removing the excess from the board. 

Po wyschnięciu kleju miękkim pędzlem zmiotłem luźną gąbkę. Brzegi podstaw pozostawiłem w kolorze ziemi, ale to kwestia upodobań. Naniosłem wzór trawy wykonałem w kształcie ameby :) Znowu korzystając z elektrosadzarki i trawy statycznej. Jeszcze tylko usunięcie nadmiaru trawy i gotowe!
When glue is dry, using soft brush I removed lose flock. Edges of the boards I left in ground colour, but this is something up to you guys to decide. Where the grass pattern is in amoeba style :) Again using my home made device and static grass. Remove grass excess and it is Ready!

Jednak nie do końca... Od kleju na bazie wody płyta MDF potrafi się wygiąć, co oczywiście nastąpiło. Zatem suszarka do włosów i podgrzane placki nabierają właściwego płaskiego kształtu. Teraz dopiero można cieszyć oko lasami z prawdziwego zdarzenia.
However... From water based glue the MDF board can bend, and obviously it happened. So using hair dryer I warmed up the boards and this helped to restore their flat shape. Now finally we can enjoy the look of "real" self made forest!
